In Rajasthan, fire in IOC depot continues to blaze; four killed and 140 injured

In Rajasthan, more than 17 hours after a massive fire broke out at Indian Oil Corporation's fuel depot near Jaipur, efforts are still on to bring it under control. Petrol and diesel stored in tanks are still burning. Foam-carrying fire tenders have been rushed to the site from Mathura, Panipat and Ahmedabad. Specialised fire fighting teams have reached Jaipur from Mumbai and Delhi and have begun assessing the situation. The government said that four persons lost their lives in the mishap. Around 140 people were injured in the fire but most of them were discharged after first aid. The fire that started due to a leakage in one of the valves at around 7.30 p.m. on Thursday continues to rage in five of the 13 tanks that stored petrol, diesel and kerosene. Black clouds of smoke continue to billow from the tanks, and could be seen from a distance of 10 km on the Jaipur-Tonk highway. Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, who visited the site early on Friday morning said that there is not much that can be done currently and all of petrol and diesel have to be burnt before fire tenders can even go anywhere near the burning tanks.
Mr. Deora said that IOC will give an ex-gratia of 10 lakh rupees to
the kin of those killed in the fire , 2 lakh rupees to those seriously injured and 1 lakh would be given to those with minor injuries. He said that this is besides the compensation announced by the Rajasthan government.
Mr.Deora said that a five-member committee headed by M B Lal, former Chairman and Managing Director, Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd, will go into the causes and suggest holistic safety measures. The committee will submit its report in six weeks.
Meanwhile,7 rehabilitation centers have been opened where the people evacuated from the nearby villages are taking shelter. The schools in the nearby villages will remain closed on Friday. The District administration has prohibited entry in an area of five kilometers around the spot to prevent people from inhaling the poisonous gases. All factories in the industrial area have been closed. People in the nearby areas have started complaining of breathing problems and irritation in eyes. Nearby hospitals have been asked to attend to such patients.
The North-Western Railway has either cancelled or diverted 20 trains from Jaipur as the Railway track is passing near the incident sight. Nearby villages, colonies and hostels in nearby institutional area were evacuated and traffic on the adjoining Jaipur-Kota Highway was also diverted.
