In Jharkhand, 40 to 45 per cent polling reported in second phase of the assembly elections

In Jharkhand, polling is on for the second phase of assembly elections amidst tight security arrangements in 14 out of the remaining 55 constituencies. About 40 to 45 per cent voters have exercised their franchise till a short while ago. Polling which began at 7 on Wednesday morning will end at three in the afternoon . Most of the constituencies are in the Naxals infested areas. Director General of Police B. D. Ram said heavy deployment of forces have been made to ensure free and fair polls. Meanwhile, one policeman was killed on Wednesday in a land mine blast triggered by Maoists in Giridih district. However, the polling process in three assembly segments in Giridih district, however, was unaffected by the blast. In a separate incident in Giridih, the Maoists blew up a culvert at Matiobera.Long queues were witnessed in Khunti district where women outnumbered the men at Hutar, Kalamati and Dungra.31 lakh voters will decide the electoral fortune of 259 candidates including 15 women candidates in this phase. The five-stage polling in Jharkhand will conclude on December 18.
