Improved intelligence gathering, global sharing mechanism to tackle terrorism: Prez

The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has called for improved intelligence gathering and global sharing mechanism to deal with terrorism. Inaugurating a two-day Global Security Conference in New Delhi, she said, the exposure of innocent civilian population to random incidents of violence has increased, as terrorists have adopted more audacious and more insidious methods.

Describing terrorism as a worldwide operation, Mrs Patil said, an effective response to it will require a concerted, coordinated and cooperative effort by all governments and by all citizens of the world who seek peace and development.

She said it is a fallacy to think that any country or society can be immune to terror attacks as it is an ideology born out of hatred and its adherents belong to no religion, culture or civilisation. She said, every state has a responsibility to deal firmly and immediately with any person or group in its territory involved in any manner with terrorism, be it training, financing, operating, indoctrinating, facilitating or masterminding acts of terror anywhere in the world.

The President added that nations also would need to strengthen their own structures to deal with terrorism.

Participants from over 20 countries, including the UK, the US, Pakistan, Israel will be attending the events organised by Central Association of Private Security Industry and the Association of Private Detectives and Investigators.
