The Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma has said that the import of rough diamonds by India has increased from 6659 million US dollars in 2008-09 to 6764 million US dollars in 2009-10. He gave this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. He said in an endeavour to make India an international diamond trading hub, the Foreign Trade Policy (2009-14) provides for establishing Diamond Bourses. The Minister said recently, Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) has been set up in Mumbai as a private sector initiative with an objective to promote trade.
