Impasse between admin & students continues at NIT Srinagar

In Jammu & Kashmir, the impasse between the administration and the non-local students continued at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar. The non local students on 5th consecutive day today did not attend to their classes at the campus. The student groups including women again tried to march outside the campus in the morning.

However, the security forces deployed at campus did not allow them to come out of the campus main gate. No untoward incident was reported. The local students have been attending the classes following the NIT administration call. The HRD team will remain at NIT till the examinations starting from April 11 were over. Sources said the HRD team is reported to have rejected the unjustified demand of agitating students to shift the NIT outside State.

Chairman NIT Board of Governors M J Zarabi, directors Sanjeev Sharma and Faizal Mehmood arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday to take stock of the situation at the NIT. The government is closely monitoring the situation in the Institute. The state administration, officials of the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry and NIT are involved in resolving all the issues pertaining to the NIT unrest.

The government yesterday ordered magisterial inquiry into the NIT unrest and the related incidents. Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar has been asked to conduct inquiry into the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 days.

The Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar also visited the institute and reviewed the security on and around the campus. State Education Minister Naeem Akhtar earlier said it was not local versus non-local issue or security issue as was being projected by some sections of media.

CRPF & SSB personnel have been deployed inside the campus while J&K Police personnel are stationed at the gates of the campus. The NIT administration has issued a notice asking non-local students who intend to visit their homes to provide telephone numbers of their parents so that permission could be obtained for them to leave the campus.

Meanwhile, Teachers Society of NIT in a statement appealed all the students and their parents to desist from playing into the hands of what it called the vested interests who were trying to play politics on current situation. The Teacher Society also refuted the allegations of partiality and playing with the careers of non local students.
