<br/>Government asserts that Public-Private Partnership module will be adopted to develop better storage facilities for the procured food grains. An investment of 4000 crore rupees will be required for the purpose. Addressing the inaugural session on the second day of the two-day Food Secretaries' Conference in New Delhi, the Food and Consumer Affairs Minister, Mr. Sharad Pawar said that immediate action will be taken against the officials responsible for improper storage of food grains that leads to their rotting in godowns.<br/><br/>He said that correct identification of families below poverty line is one of the biggest challenges in the effective implementation of the Targeted Public Distribution System. He called for involvement of the local bodies in the process of identification of the eligible families. <br/><br/>Expressing concerns over levels of food grain procurement, he said that it is a challenge to sustain the level of production and procurement in future. Conceding leakages in the system, Mr. Pawar said that elimination of bogus ration cards is crucial to ensure that subsidized food reaches the poor. Addressing the conference, the UID Chief, Mr. Nandan Nilekani explained the importance of the unique identification numbers in plugging the leakages and making the system effective. He said that technology has a major role to play in bringing about transparency in the system. Mr. Pawar also launched a smart card based system for Haryana and Chandigarh for the delivery of essential commodities under the TPDS. This system provides for more accountability and prevents duplication of ration cards.
