The International Monetary Fund has given assurances to support Bangladesh’s programmes in energy, power and infrastructure development of the country. The Director of IMF for Asia and the Pacific region Mr. Anoop Singh gave this assurance during his meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganobhavan in Dhaka today. Briefing reporters about the meeting, Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought IMF’s support for various development projects like the Padma bridge and the construction of a deep sea port. Emphasising the importance being given by her government on public private partnership to achieving overall development, she said her government has taken up various programmes for economic development of the people and for infrastructural development in the country. The Prime Minister said despite worldwide economic downturn Bangladesh has achieved 5.5 progress in economic sector. The IMF Director appreciated the success of the Bangladesh government in the country's economic sector despite a worldwide economic recession. Earlier yesterday the IMF Director met the Finance Minister of Bangladesh Mr.A.M.A.Muhith. Talking to reporters after the meeting Mr.Muhith said that International Monetary Fund is likely to provide one billion US dollars to Bangladesh for the implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy II launched earlier this year.
