India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above normal temperature in most parts of the country this summer season. Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana are likely to see markedly warmer temperatures along with hill states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

The hill states may experience on an average 1 degree above normal temperature, the IMD said in its forecast for the season. The warmer summer forecast is in line with a generally warmer trend over previous months. Accordng to the IMD, the year 2016 was the warmest year in a century.

Studies also indicate increasing trends in the frequency and duration of heat waves across the country which can be attributed to increasing trends in the greenhouse gases and the warming of the sea surface temperatures over the equatorial Indian and Pacific Oceans, the met department said in a statement today.
