Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Dr. Madhavan Nair Rajeevan, and Director, Indian Meteorological Department Dr. M. Mohapatra, today inaugurated the Winter Fog Experiment (WIFEX) 2016-17 Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. <br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion Dr. Rajeevan said, the presence of heavy fog in the northern regions of the country is one of the major reasons that leads to delay in flights. Forecast of the fog from the WIFEX model will be made operational for winter 2017-18. Dr. Mohapatra, said, the aim of the observational campaign is to achieve the better understanding of the fog life cycle and improve capability in fog prediction.<br/> <br/>AIR correspondent reports Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is carrying out the multi-institutional initiative during 2016-17 winter. The fog observational campaign is being conducted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport(IGIA) with the cooperation and support of airport authority of India and GMR. India Meteorological Department, National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) are participating in the campaign being led by Indian Institute of tropical Meteorology, Pune.
