Illiteracy hindering ops in Afghanistan: NATO

<br/>A top NATO training official in Afghanistan has said that widespread illiteracy is preventing the local Army and Police from becoming a modern security force.<br/><br/>Chief of education division in NATO training mission Mike Faughnan said they could train the forces only at the very basic level due to lack of literacy. He said the mission had launched a campaign to educate Afghan security forces.<br/><br/>There are lots of expectations from Afghan security forces as they are supposed to take over security responsibility gradually from end of this year. The NATO official said they were aiming to provide at least third-grade literacy to all security personnel. But as the Afghan forces are involved in joint anti-insurgent operations, providing them training at the base is an extra challenge. There are around two lakh Afghan security personnel at present.
