In the 'illegal telephone exchange' case, a CBI special court in Chennai has issued copies of charge sheet to former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother and media moghul Kalanithi Maran and five others yesterday. The charge sheet filed by the CBI runs into 2500 pages in six volumes.

As the Maran brothers sought adjournment for moving the court to discharge them from the case, the 13th Additional Judge for CBI cases S. Jawahar posted the case to July 28, even before framing of charges.

The Maran brothers and senior officials of the pubic sector BSNL are alleged to have installed a number of high-end telecommunication facilities at the residence of Mr. Dayanidhi Maran during his tenure as the Telecom Minister in 2004.

They are reported to have been used for the Sun TV, which is owned by Mr Kalanidhi Maran and others. As bills were not raised for the lines during the period 2004 to 2007, the CBI filed the case in 2013, alleging that they have caused heavy financial losses to the exchequer.
