Illegal Mining: CBI files chargesheet against OMC

The CBI today filed the chargesheet in the illegal mining case involving former Karnataka Minister Janardhana Reddy. The investigating agency also charge sheeted Obulapuram Mining Company Managing Director Srinivasa Reddy and former Director of Mines V D Rajagopal in the case. They are on judicial remand now. The accused have been charged under the provisions of criminal conspiracy, cheating, theft, criminal trespass, breach of trust by public servant and forgery.

AIR correspondent reports that, following the Supreme Court direction, the CBI today filed the chargesheet relating to the illegal mining case to the special court in Hyderabad.

The Obulapuram Mining Company has been charged with illegal mining of iron ore in the areas other than allotted to it in Ananthpur district of the Andhra Pradesh. The CBI also submitted over 600 documents running to thousands of pages and 200 evidences in support to its chargesheet that crossed 100 pages.

After registering a case over the illegal mining of iron ore in December 2009, the CBI arrested former Karnataka Minister Janardhan Reddy and Managing Director of OMC Srinivasa Reddy in September this year. Former Mines director of Andhra Pradesh Rajagopal and IAS officer Srilakshmi have been arrested last month for showing undue favour to the OMC and misusing their powers.

Though Srilakshmi has been granted conditional bail yesterday, rest of the three accused are in Chanchalguda Central Jail in Hyderabad at present. The suspended IAS Officer Srilakshmi did not figure in the chargesheet. However, CBI officials informed the court that a supplementary chargesheet may be filed in which her name might be included after obtaining necessary approval from the Union Government.
