The Swedish furniture chain IKEA is to publish a report today into allegations that it used forced labour by East German political prisoners. Former prisoners say they were forced to work on furniture after IKEA gave contract to the Communist government. A report from Berlin says in the sixties and seventies, IKEA gave contracts to the East German Government to produce furniture. An association of former political prisoners says the work was done by the people in prison by a feared secret police. It is not commenting before publication but has said in the past that it did not know that political prisoners helped make its furniture. If the report finds that IKEA did not know the political prisoners were doing the work, those former prisoners will seek compensation.
