Ideals and principles of Constitution are under attack: Sonia Gandhi

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today expressed concern over the violation in the Constitutional values. Participating in the special discussion on commitment to India's Constitution in Lok Sabha, Mrs Gandhi said, the ideals and principles that are embedded in the Constitution and inspired the leaders are now under attack. The debate is a part of the 125th birth anniversary celebration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, architect of the Indian Constitution<br/><br/>Mrs Gandhi asserted that there is no alternative whatsoever to Constitutional methods. The Congress leader said, during the last few months what is happening is against what makers of the Constitution had conceived. Without referring to the present government, she said those who have no faith in the Constitution and also had no role in its making are chanting its name. <br/> <br/>Mrs Sonia Gandhi said, Indian Constitution is flexible and has gone through over oen hundred amendments so far. She said, working of a Constitution does not depend wholly upon its nature, but how it is implemented. Mrs Gandhi said, even a good Constitution may turnout bad if those who are responsible for its implementation happens to be bad. <br/><br/>She lauded the contribution of Dr B R Ambedkar, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the making of the Constitution. She said, the history of Indian Constitution is very old and it is intricately linked to the history of Indian National Congress.<br/><br/>Earlier, in her opening remarks, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said the Constitution is India's holy book. It reflects our national ideals and thinking over the centuries. The Constitution empowers all our national institutions and citizens. It enshrines and safeguards the ideals, values and citizens' rights. <br/><br/>The Speaker said our Constitution has stood the test of time in the last 65 years. It has established the rule of law in the country and has strengthened our social, economic and political goals. As a result, democracy has taken firm roots in India. Mrs. Mahajan underlined that consensus deeply matters in democratic administration. All elected representatives have to work together to solve the problems faced by the people, she emphasised.
