In Kerala, the Special Court dealing with the Idamalayar case in Kochi on Wednesday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former state Electricity Minister R Balakrishna Pillai and two others in the Idamalayar Hydro Electric Power Project case. Besides Pillai, non-bailable arrest warrants have been issued against the former Chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board Ramabhadran Nair and P K Sajeev, a close associate of Pillai. The court rejected a plea by Pillai's counsel seeking two more day's time to surrender before the court. The court also directed that the warrant be returned by the 19th of this month. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court had recently convicted and sentenced the trio to one year rigorous imprisonment in the connection with the Idamalayar case. The prosecution charge was that Pillai caused pecuniary loss of about two crore rupees to the KSEB by awarding contracts for the construction of a power tunnel and surge shaft of the Idamalayar project to a contractor at extraordinarily high rates.
