Icy winds intensify cold condition across northern India

Icy winds intensified cold condition across northern parts of the Country making life difficult for the people on Monday. Delhi witnessed its coldest day of the season so far. The minimum temperature overnight was recorded at 8.2 degrees Celsius, which is a degree above normal. An almost overcast sky during the morning hours prevented the sun from offering any solace to the people. The maximum temperature had on Sunday plunged to 14.6 degrees Celsius, six degrees down the normal level. The Met Department says the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 7 degrees and 16 degrees Celsius respectively. AIR correspondent reports, Sun continues to play hide and seek with Delhiites, as icy cold winds keep up the chill in the air. Pretty unlikely for this part of the season, fog has not been very intense. No flights from the Indira Gandhi International Airport have been delayed or cancelled due to bad weather on Monday. However, with the mercury dipping down to 8 degress and headed towards a low of 4 degrees, there is no respite from the biting cold on cards. In Uttarakhand, cold wave conditions continue with mercury dipping to below zero degree levels at few places in the state. Weather is clear and sun is shining bright at most parts of the state. However, frost and fog have affected the normal life at many places. Meanwhile, about a dozen tourists are stranded in Harshil town of Uttarkashi district due to road blockade because of snowfall. According to Director, Met department, Dehradun, Anand Sharma, the weather will remain dry in the next twenty four hours but the cold winds would continue with fog and frost in plain areas. AIR correspondent reports, Uttarakhand today experienced cold wave conditions with most of the peaks in the state donning the white mantle, though the weather remained dry across the state except Udhamsingh Nagar. Water taps were frozen in the morning at some high altitude areas of Champawat, Chamoli and Uttarkashi. District Magistrate of Champawat, Dr. Pankaj Pandey, has directed their sub ordinate to arrange bonfire as a precautionary measure. As per reports the ski slopes of Auli are covered with snow earlier but snow melting is taking place at fast pace due to sunshine. However SAF games officials are making arrangements to retain snow to ensure a successful winter games which is scheduled to begin from 14th of this month. In Madhya Pradesh, Most parts of the state are in grip of cold wave. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that both day and night temperatures have dipped drastically as wind pattern turned northerly. The lowest minimum temperature in the state dipped to as low as 1 degrees and was recorded in Panchmarhi. Similar conditions are prevailing in the other parts of the state. Rewa and Umaria recorded minimum temperature of 3 degrees each. People are found seeking comfort under sheets of woolen wears. Fires on roadsides are a common sight. The Met department has predicted continuance of cold wave conditions throughout the state. In Uttar Pradesh, the westerly winds increased the severity of cold. Schools up to eighth standard have been closed in badly hit districts. AIR correspondent quoting met office reports that the minimum temperature ranged between 2 to 9 degrees. All the schools up to eighth standard have been closed in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions till 5th of January. Mist and clouds are looming large over the eastern UP. In western region, the situation is worst due to heavy snowfall on the heights of Uttarakhand. Bijnore was the coldest place during last 24 hrs where the minimum temperature dipped to 2.2 degrees. The roads wore a deserted look. The rail and road traffic is badly hampered due to fog in several districts. Bihar is reeling under severe cold. Icy winds have affected normal life in the state. AIR Patna Correspondent reports that the State Government has ordered closure of all schools till the 8th of this month due to biting cold. Meanwhile, the tourists arrival to Kashmir valley, have started picking up after the recent snow-fall. But the cold wave conditions have also further intensified.
