ICMR to study contamination of soil, water in Bhopal

The Indian Council of Medical Research will conduct studies to check contamination of soil and water at areas around the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy site. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, Director General, ICMR, V M Kathoch said that even if the toxicity has vanished, it is not sure that contamination is over. For conducting these studies, the ICMR has invited research proposals on long-term effects of methyl isocyanate gas, if any, on the population there. Mr. Katoch said the organisation has never discontinued any work that will be of help to the people affected by the tragedy. Eight hospitals in the city are dedicated to treat patients complaining about ophthalmic problem or lung injury.
