Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has joined hands with Indian Council of Agricultural Research to monitor control and prevent diseases transmitted from animals to humans. ICMR Director General V M Katoch said it has been found that 75 percent of the infectious diseases have originated from animals. He said ICMR will screen animals for vectors, detect the virus and sort out ways to prevent them. Speaking to AIR, Mr. Katoch said studies will be conducted on diseases like Rabies, Avian influenza, Japanese encephalitis, Leptospirosis, Plague and Anthrax Zoonosis, Swine flu, Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis and the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever as they have been transmitted from animals to humans. People who are at risk of contracting these diseases include infants and small children, pregnant women, elderly, immune-compromised people, veterinarians, and other animal health care workers.
