Iceland to vote on Icesave plan

The people of Iceland go to the polls today in a controversial referendum caused by the collapse of the country's banking system. This will be the first referendum in Iceland history on plans to repay debts owed to the UK and the Netherlands in the wake of Icesave bank's collapse.<br/><br/> The British and Dutch governments want reimbursement for the 3.8 billion euros they paid out in compensation to customers in 2008. Talks between the three countries broke down yesterday without an agreement. Iceland's Prime Minister has urged voters to shun the referendum, and said that she will not vote.
