ICC Cricket World Cup: Aus beat Sri Lanka; Become 3rd team to qualify for QFs

Australia has become the third team after co-hosts New Zealand and defending champions India to reach the quarter-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. They defeated Sri Lanka by 64 runs in Sydney today to record their third victory in five games and displace the Lankans from the second spot in Pool-A.AIR correspondent reports, Aussie Skipper Michael Clarke opted to bat first hoping to post a mammoth total for the Lankans, the team which had chased 312 with ease in their last game against England. After an early road block, Clarke himself with Steven Smith resurrected the Aussie innings with some lovely cricket. But, the innings of the day was yet to come. With Shane Watson at the crease, Glenn Maxwell played an innings of his life scoring his maiden ODI ton off just 51 balls, the second fastest in World Cup history. Both shared 160 runs for the fifth wicket helping the hosts compile 376 for 9. The Lions had a nervy start with the bat as they lost Lahiru Thirimanne early. The exceptional Kumara Sangakkara, then, came to the crease and scored his third consecutive World Cup century to again become the highest run-getter in this World Cup. However, his classy innings of 104 could not save the Lions, who despite a decent run-rate fell short by 64 runs in the 47th over. Earlier, in another Group-A game, New Zealand recorded their fifth consecutive victory of the tournament by beating Afghanistan by 6 wickets at Napier. Spinner Daniel Vettori, who was adjudged man of the match for his 4 wickets, became the fifth spinner and 12th bowler overall to reach 300 ODI wickets.Tomorrow, England will take on Bangladesh in a Pool-A fixture at Adelaide. The match will begin at 9 AM Indian Time.
