The India Brazil South Africa, IBSA summit concluded in Pretoria with a pledge to strengthen cooperation for reforms in the UN Security Council, UNSC. Addressing a joint press conference at the Presidential guest house, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, the three countries acted in concert on the global stage, dealing with complex regional and international political and security issues. Dr. Singh said, IBSA can play a role in promoting the cause of international peace and security.
In the trilateral discussions, the South African President Mr.Jacob Zuma, President of Brazil Ms. Dilma Rousseff and Prime Minister Dr. Singh reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive sustainable development for the well being of their people.
Deliberations among the three leaders emphasized upon entrenched democratic values shared by the three countries for the benefit of the people. The joint declaration issued after the summit said that IBSA is also willing to share these values with the countries which are in transition to democracy.
The three countries also decided to sort out issues related to non-tariff barriers, connectivity and visa matters as part of giving further boost to investments.
South Africa and Brazil also condemned the recent terror attacks in India and demanded urgent finalisation of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism by the UN. At their Summit meeting the three leaders emphasised the central role of the UN in coordinating international action against terrorism within the framework of the UN Charter and in accordance with the international law.
The Joint declaration said the leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, committed by whomever, wherever and for whatever purposes, as it constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
In his address at the plenary summit, Dr. Singh cautioned that the Euro zone crisis could affect the developing countries. He asked Europe and other advanced economies to take effective and early steps to prevent the global economy from slipping into a double-dip recession.
The Prime Minister said that IBSA countries are leading emerging economies and are united in their efforts to address the deficit in global governance. Dr. Singh said, IBSA countries should co-ordinate their positions to ensure that priorities of the developing economies are adequately reflected in the deliberations of the grouping.
