The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has prohibited the transmission of news channel NDTV India for one day for violating cable TV regulations. The order based on recommendation of inter ministerial committee will be effective from 12.01 am of 9th November to 12.01 am 10th November. The panel had concluded that the channel had revealed crucial and strategically sensitive information during terror attack on Pathankot airbase in January.

The committee's order referred to NDTV's news telecast on 4th January while counter operations by the security forces were still on at the Pathankot airbase. It states that the reporter on ground gave out strategically-sensitive information.

The inter-ministerial committee has noted that the telecast was in clear violation of the programme code under Cable TV Network Rules, 1994, which prevents live coverage of anti-terrorist operations by security forces. Until the operations conclude, the rules also limit media coverage to only the briefing given by designated officials which in this case was the DIG, NSG. The Ministry's action against the channel is the first case of violation of provisions inserted into the programme code last year.

NDTV, in a statement, expressed shock that it has been singled out saying every channel and newspaper had similar coverage. It claimed that it's coverage was particularly balanced.

Meanwhile, the Editors Guild of India has expressed unhappiness over the decision of the inter-ministerial panel. The editors' body demanded that the order be immediately rescinded.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the central government for putting a one-day ban on a Hindi news channel and said it showed that an emergency-like situation prevailed in the country. Calling it shocking, she said in a statement that there are provisions available for dealing with crucial and strategically sensitive information.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today said, NDTV India ban is shocking and unprecedented.
