<span style="color: #222222;">Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur has called upon media to play a greater and more constructive role in building a new India as the stature of the nation rises globally. Mr Thakur was speaking at a function to celebrate the National Press Day – 2022 in New Delhi. He said, a vibrant democracy like India needs a vibrant press. <br />''<br />''Mr Thakur expressed happiness that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Government has made the information landscape more robust by streamlining governance norms through simplified and transparent processes. He said, all information and data are now available in multiple languages on real time basis on the PIB website. <br />''<br />''The Minister mentioned that PIB's fact-check service is debunking fake news to prevent both circulation and amplification of malicious disinformation. Mr Thakur said, Press Council needs to emphasise the promotion of diverse views and protection of women journalists, along with transgender representation. He said, within a decade of the Press Council of India coming into existence as a Lighthouse for Press Freedom, it was abolished during the Emergency along with the suspension of Fundamental Rights.<br />''<br />''The Minister said, much of the media governance structure is self-regulatory, but self-regulatory does not mean licence to err and err intentionally. Mr Thakur said, this type of mistake can erode media credibility.<br />''<br />''Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan said, press has played a major role in pre independence era. He said, now a days, false news is posing a very big threat for the society. Dr Murigan appreciated the media fraternity for their relentless effort in circulating information to the masses. He said, press is the 4th pillar of democracy.</span>
