The international energy agency which advises governments on policy has called for a fundamental re-think of the way energy is produced and used. The IAEA says it is vital to end dependence on fossil fuels. It says the global recession has led to a decline in energy use but that will be quickly reversed with an economic recovery. The current policies put the world on what it calls alarming fossil fuel energy path. By 2030 the carbon dioxide emissions from energy use would be double of what they were in 1990. The report says that outcome could be averted with rapid and comprehensive transformation of the way energy is produced and used. It says a robust agreement is needed at the forthcoming United Nations conference on climate change in Copenhagen.
