Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh, has said he was not against the POSCO steel project in Odisha. He, however, said the project can't go ahead by ignoring the law of the land. Ramesh, who is on a two-day visit to Odisha, told media persons at Bhubaneswar that the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, CRZ Notification, 2011, Forest Regulations Act, 2006 and Environment Protection Act, 1986 needs to be followed strictly before giving final clearance to the Rs 52,000 crore steel project.Rejecting the allegations that he did not want industrialisation to take place in Odisha, the Union Minister said, it was not true. He also said the Odisha Government must clarify where from the POSCO plant would get iron ores and the mines that the South Korean steel major was going to get on lease. Ramesh also questioned about the fate of Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) between Odisha Government and POSCO that has already expired since a year.On a few clarifications, he had sought from the Odisha Government, Ramesh said, he was yet to get any reply. He said, the decision of 'Palli Sabhas' of two villages in the project area could not be ignored. The Odisha Government needs to say what action it had taken on the decision of the two 'Palli Sabhas' or it had to lodge first information reports in the police stations stating that the decision of the two 'Palli Sabhas' were fake.
