I respect Vajpayee as a senior politician, says Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday refused to be drawn into the controversy surrounding the indictment of Atal Bihari Vajpayee by the Liberhan Commission, saying he respected the former Prime Minister as a senior politician.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, he said, it is difficult for him to sit on judgement on the issue.

His comments came came a day after the Congress adopted a conciliatory tone virtually giving a clean chit to Vajpayee in the conspiracy to bring down the Babri Masjid in 1992. The Congress General Secretary said since he had not gone through the Commission's report into the demolition of the Babri Masjid, it would not be proper for him to comment.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Government on Tuesday shot off a letter to the Centre over alleged violation of security norms during Rahul Gandhi's visit to the state, saying the Congress leader was not travelling in a bullet-proof car and that his chopper had landed in zero visibility conditions.

Additional Cabinet Secretary V S Pandey told reporters that in the letter sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been requested to ensure that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is an SPG protectee, does not violate security norms during his future visit to the state.
