Congress leader from Maharashtra, Mr. Hussian Dalwai has won the Rajya Sabha bypoll held in Mumbai on Friday. Mr. Dalwai defeated BJP’s Surendra alias Bal Mane by a margin of 71 votes. In all, 175 MLAs voted in favour of Mr. Dalwai, while 105 MLAs voted for Mr. Mane. Out of the total 287 members of the Maharashtra assembly, five MLAs abstained from voting, while two votes were declared invalid. Earlier, Mr. Dalwai was declared elected by a margin of 72 votes but after BJP MLA, Atul Shah raised a demand for recounting, the margin decreased to 71. This bypoll was conducted to fill in the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Prithviraj Chavan who was appointed Maharashtra’s Chief Minister in April this year.
