Hundreds of people gathered across Delhi, other places demanding stringent punishment to culprits

Thousands joined the candle light vigil at Jantar Mantar to pay tribute to December 16 gangrape victim in the national capital on Saturday. Peaceful marches and protests were held at many places in the city to mourn the death of victim even as India Gate and Raisina Hill were kept out of bounds for people.

Policemen were deployed in strength in and around other parts of the capital to ensure that the protests remain peaceful besides shutting down of Delhi Metro stations near the war memorial.

Ministers of Delhi Government led candle light march, prayers and condolence meetings in various parts of the city to pay homage to the victim.

They also appealed to people to maintain peace and calm, and help authorities in making Delhi a safer place especially for women.

Delhi BJP leaders also took out candle light marches throughout the city.

Activists of Left parties staged a peace march from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar led by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat.

Earlier in the day, silent protests held across the capital as a mark of respect for the gang rape victim.

Scores of people are gathered at Jantar Mantar in Central Delhi demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.

Jawaharlal Nehru University students also hold a silent protest near the Munirka flyover, the spot where the victim had boarded the bus along with her friend on the night of 16th December.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to allow people to go to India Gate to protest.

Earlier, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said people can gather at Jantar Manar and the Ramlila ground in the city to hold peaceful protests.

In Lucknow, hundreds of women, social workers, students organised rallies to pay homage to gang raped victim who died in Singapore hospital.
The protest rallies are still continuing even in the shivering cold, not only in Lucknow but in many cities including Allahabad, Kanpur and Varanasi.
