At least 21 people were injured and over 2,000 , including ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child actor Rubina Ali, rendered homeless in the big fire in Mumbai yesterday. The blaze was controlled in the wee hours today at suburban Bandra in Mumbai. However, no death has been reported so far. Hundreds of huts were destroyed in the blaze. The fire broke out in Garibnagar slums near Bandra (East) railway station at around 8.20 pm yesterday after which 34 fire engines and 16 jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot. Official said the flames were doused around 12.30 a.m. The cause of the fire has not been known yet. Maharashtra Minority Affairs minister Naseem Khan said arrangements have been made for providing food and shelter to the affected people. He said that monetary compensation will also be given to the victims. Social activist Medha Patkar has demanded an inquiry into the cause of the fire.
