Human Rights Day being observed across world

Today is Human Rights Day. On this day in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global enunciation of human rights. The theme for this year is 'Embrace Diversity, End Discrimination'. The day is marked to promote discrimination-free societies and equal treatment for all. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillai says discrimination lies at the root of many of the world’s most pressing human rights problems and no country is immune from this scourge.<br/><br/>A series of functions are being held across the world today to create awareness among the people on the importance of human rights.<br/><br/>In Nepal; various programmes were organized to observe the 61st International Human Rights Day today.<br/><br/>Addressing a seminar organized by the Nepal Human Rights Organization in Kathmandu, speakers called for an end to the culture of impunity, respect for the rule of law and to shun all forms of violence to create a society where people at all level can live with respect and dignity.<br/><br/>In his speech, Chief of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal Richard Bennett said this year’s theme of Human Rights Day- ’embrace diversity and end discrimination’- is relevant in Nepal’s context as a country rich in diversity but with too much of discrimination that can spread mistrust and humiliation and lead to violence and conflict. He called for a discrimination-free society and honour human rights of every citizen.<br/><br/>AIR Correspondent reports that human rights activists took out a rally in Kathmandu today to mark the international day of the human rights. The Chairman of Nepal’s National Human Rights Commission Kedar Nath Upadhyaya called upon the people to stand united to protect human rights.<br/>
