Huge funds needed for universal immunisation

Government today said that huge funds are needed for universal immunisation of the pneumonia programme. Replying supplementaries in the Lok Sabha today, the Health Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad said at present the budget is inadequate for starting such an initiative programme. Mr. Azad said that 19 per cent of deaths below the age of five occur due to pneumonia. He said at present this programme is being implemented in 356 districts and another 170 districts are being taken-up in the current fiscal. He made it clear to the House that no single vaccine can prevent pneumonia but there are vaccines available which are not part of the National Immunisation Programme. In reply to a question, the Minister informed the members that the medicines are being provided free of cost up to sub-centre level under the National Rural Health Mission Programme.<br/>
