Human Resources Development Ministry's suggestion to IITs to teach Sanskrit, especially with reference to study of works which contain scientific knowledge, has evoked sharp reaction among opposition parties. Pramod Tiwari of the Congress said compelling anyone to study Sanskrit is not right. He told media outside Parliament, that he does not think IIT engineers need Sanskrit in their profession.

BSP Chief Mayawati accused the government of implementing RSS agenda by making such efforts. She said, the students should not be forced to study any language and it must be left to them. D Raja of the CPI questioned the government's motive behind it. He wondered why only Sanskrit be taught in IIT and why not other languages like Tamil. He said, the government should take Parliament into confidence as this is a policy matter.

D P Tripathi of the NCP also echoed same view saying that everyone has the right to choose his or her language. He said, it must be left to the institutions to decide which language they want to teach and government should not interfere in it. Yesterday, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, HRD Minister Smirit Irani had said that the IITs have been requested to teach Sanskrit language for facilitating study of science and technology as reflected in its literature.
