HRD ministry calls for special IIT council meet

The Human Resources Development, HRD Ministry has convened a special meeting of IIT Council on Wednesday to address the uncertainity faced by the students after the resolutions by the Senates of IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Delhi. HRD Ministry had proposed a Common Enterance Test, CET, for admissions to engineering courses of Centrally funded institutions.

However, some IIT's have reservation about the proposal. According to the HRD Ministry proposal, CET will give a minimum 40 per cent weightage to performance of a class XII student. For admissions to NITs and IIITs, class XII marks and performance in the main test would be taken into account.

The CET's aim is to reduce the number of examinations a student has to take for fulfilling his or her dream to become an engineer. It will also help in eliminating capitation fee as all colleges would draw students from a single merit list. The academicians felt that students keen on joining an engineering course, give more importance to coaching classes rather than what was taught in the school.
