The Himachal Pradesh Government has asked Centre to provide sixty companies of Central Para Military Forces for conducting free and fair elections in the state. Along with state police, they would man 7252 booths including 2080 sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations. The Chief Electoral Officer of the state, Narinder Chauhan has told AIR that as a precaution, borders of Himachal Pradesh with the neighboring states would be sealed two days in advance of the polling day to prevent entry of unscrupulous elements. A reportHimachal Pradesh Election Commission's data shows that only three thousand nine hundred and sixteen voters (3916) have increased as compared to 2007 assembly elections. Interestingly, the data shows tremendous decrease in women electors which have gone down about 40,000 in the last five years. The Chief Electoral Officer of the state, Narinder Chauhan has clarified that the reason behind decrease in women voters is due to cancellation of dual votes. He said the election staff has ensured that no one should have the name registered at two different places. Meanwhile, more than one lakh new voters would exercise their franchise this time. The CEO has told AIR that as a precaution, borders of Himachal Pradesh with the neighboring states would be absolutely sealed two days in advance of the polling day to avoid entry of unscrupulous elements.
