‘Hostage crisis ends in Pakistan with release of 25 hostages

In Pakistan, the hostage crisis has ended with commandos storming a building near army headquarters in Rawalpindi this morning freeing 30 hostages and killing four attackers. The heavily-armed terrorists were holed up for nearly 20 hours in the building after targeting Pakistan army headquarters.<br/><br/>Chief military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told state-run PTV that the operation is over. Twenty-five hostages were rescued in the first phase and five more later. He said, the situation is under control and the entire area has been cleared. There are no terrorists inside the building. Major General Abbas said the commandos killed four terrorists, some of them wearing suicide jackets. <br/><br/>The development came a day after a group of terrorists armed with assault rifles and grenades launched an attack on the army's General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and took several security personnel hostage. Four of the<br/>attackers and six security personnel were killed yesterday.<br/><br/>The terrorists had shot dead six soldiers, including a Brigadier and a Lt Colonel, near a check post outside the Headquarters.<br/><br/>Power was cut off in the area where the terrorists were hiding since late last night. TV channels reported that 22 hostages were freed from one room after the commandos gunned down a suicide bomber before he could detonate his explosives.
