Egyptian authorities have detained the former President Hosni Mubarak for 15 days as part of a corruption investigation. Prosecutors made the announcement today shortly after Mr. Mubarak was hospitalized with heart problems while being questioned by authorities in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Egyptian media reported that his sons Alaa and Gamal have also been detained for 15 days. The Mubaraks, along with several top officials have been accused of embezzling public funds and abuse of power for using force against protesters during anti-government demonstrations earlier this year. The ousted President has said the allegations against him are unfounded, and that he has the right to defend his reputation and that of his family. Meanwhile, protesters have stepped up pressure on Egypt's ruling military to try Mr. Mubarak and members of his government for corruption and other crimes. Mr Mubarak bowed out of power in February after a popular uprising against his rule. Younger son Gamal was once widely seen as a possible successor to his father as president.
