Hong Kong police have released several activists detained for staging a protest ahead of the territory's handover anniversary. Police said, the activists had been released on bail and must report back to police in September. <br/><br/>The political party Demosisto, founded by student leaders Joshua Wong and legislator Nathan Law , said on its Twitter account that all its arrested members were released. Police had arrested 26 pro-democracy activists including Wong and Law, who were calling for greater political freedoms and protesting against the perceived growing influence of Beijing. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping who is in Hong Kong inspected the troops at a local garrison today. The city is holding a series of events to mark 20 years since it was handed back to China by Britain. There is growing concern that the Chinese central government is undermining Hong Kong's more politically liberal traditions, despite its promise to give it a high degree of autonomy under the "one country, two systems" principle.<br/><br/>Earlier, US has urged China to respect civil liberties in Hong Kong, including press freedom. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, the United States admires the city's outstanding achievements, which are the result of its high degree of autonomy, its economic and personal freedoms, and its respect for rule of law.
