Home Secretary visits Srinagar today to take stock of situation

The Cabinet Committee on security is now meeting in New Delhi to discuss the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following violent protests in the valley. The Home Secretary Mr. G.K. Pillai is visiting Srinagar today to take stock of the situation in the Kashmir valley. The decision on the Home Secretary's visit follows meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security held in New Delhi this morning. <br/>Meanwhile the Centre today said that the army has been deployed in the valley on the request of the state government to assist the civil authorities to restore peace. <br/><br/>Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in New Delhi today, the Minister of State for Defence Mr. Pallam Raju said that army will be on the stand by and will stay in the valley till the situation improves. He said that the government however would like to recall the army as soon as possible.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the decision to deploy the army was taken late last night in view of the fact that adequate police personnel were not available to deal with the situation as they have been deployed for Amarnath Yatra and counter-insurgency operations. <br/>
