Home Ministry seeks report from UP govt over alleged forced conversions in Agra

Home Ministry today sought a report from Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged religious conversions in Agra. There are reports that around 200 Muslims were forcefully converted into Hinduism by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh outfit. Opposition parties continued to attack the NDA government over conversion.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh police today carried out searches at several places in Agra to nab the alleged mastermind of controversial forced conversion, Nand Kishore Balmiki. SP City Agra Samir Saurabh said that all the steps are being taken to nab the accused who has been named in the FIR. Balmiki, however, still remains at large. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, while condemning the act, said that whosoever is responsible of such act will be punished severely. Principal secretary Home Debashish Panda said that the government has viewed the matter very seriously. He said that instructions have been issued to all DMs and SPs to take immediate action of the matter by lodging the FIR if any such thing happens in their areas.

Governor Ram Naik has also said that the state government should investigate the matter and should appropriate action in it. On the other hand saffron outfits have not only defended their act but also said that they will continue their programme as it is not a conversion but re-conversion or home coming. The State minority Commission has also taken strong view of the matter and has asked for a report from local administration of Agra.
