Home Ministry seeks report from Delhi Police over death of NE youth; 3 detained

Home Ministry has sought a detailed report from Delhi Police over the incident leading to the death of a youth from Arunachal Pradesh after he was allegedly beaten up by some shopkeepers following an altercation in New Delhi. Nido Tania, a student, was allegedly beaten to death at Lajpat Nagar on Thursday. A home Ministy official said that the Ministry is in constant touch with Delhi Police over the case. The official also added that issue of the safety of students and others from the northeastern part of the country who are residing in Delhi and other states has been a major concern for the Centre.

DCP P.Karunakaran said that the autopsy of the body of the youth has been carried out at AIIMS .

Three persons have been detained for interrogation.

The Delhi Government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death. Condemning the incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recommended to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung a magisterial inquiry into how the college student died following an assault on him and what was the response of the law enforcing agencies. Government sources said, the Lt Governor's office has approved it.

All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union and All Nyishi Students Union along with several other organisations have condemned the incident and demanded that the Delhi government arrest the culprits immediately and ensure that they get strict punishment.
