Home Minister rejects the need to bring terror laws like Pota

The Home Minister today rejected the need for bringing Pota like stringent laws to deal with terror. He said that at present the existing laws are adequate but if there is a need the government will revisit them at an appropriate time. He said this while replying to a debate on the working of the Home Ministry in the Rajya Sabha today. <br/><br/>Referring to sentencing of Ajmal Amir Kasab in the Mumbai terror attack, Mr. P. Chidambram said he was not convicted on the basis of his confession but evidence.<br/><br/>He said that Pota like law would have made any difference to the trial of Kasab. The Home Minister said that except for Pune blast, last year has been terror free year. <br/><br/>He informed the House that the ATS of Maharasthra has cracked Pune Blast case and hoped that perpetrators of attack will be apprehended sooner or later. Mr. Chidambaram reiterated that there was no intelligence failure with regard to Pune blast.<br/><br/>He said that the German Bakery, where the blast took place had been given three written advisories. The Home Minister said that there is a greater sense of security now and by and large the year has been from any communal conflicts barring a few incidents.<br/><br/>Outlining the work accomplished by his ministry since he took over, Mr. Chidambaram said with the mechanisms put in place the country now has a seamless intelligence gathering network which can be shared on a real time basis. <br/><br/>With regard to the North-east, the Home Minister said that barring Assam and to a certain extent Manipur, the situation is peaceful. He said, several leaders of insurgent organisations like ULFA are in custody and there is suspension of operations. <br/><br/>He was hopeful that the situation of no violence will also come to these states. Responding to the concern about the circulation of counterfeit notes, Mr. Chidambaram said that it is a serious problem but not an alarming one.<br/><br/>On Telengana, Mr. Chidambaram expressed the hope that after Sri Krishna Committee gives its reports with help of the political parties in Andhra Pradesh, the issue will be resolved. <br/><br/>On the concern with regard to the implementation of various central schemes, the Home Minister said that he will discuss with the Prime Minister the setting up of a mechanism or authority under which directions could be given to the states. He, however, said the states can only be given directions judiciously and sparingly.
