Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviews Kashmir situation

Home Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with senior officials in New Delhi and reviewed the situation in the Kashmir valley. Later today, Home Minister spoke to Congress President Sonia Gandhi over the tense situation in Kashmir. Mr. Singh also had a telephonic conversation with former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the issue. <br/><br/>Sources said, during the conversation with them, the Home Minister discussed the efforts to bring back peace and normalcy in the Valley. His discussions with the two leaders are believed to be an attempt by the central government to take opposition leaders into confidence. Mr. Singh has already spoken to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and assured her all central assistance to tackle the violent protests.<br/><br/>

Mr. Singh has already spoken to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and assured her all central assistance to tackle the violent protests.<br/><br/>The authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in several sensitive areas of the Valley. <br/><br/>The mobile internet and train services remained suspended on 3rd consecutive day. Shops, business establishments, courts, petrol pumps and markets remained closed in summer capital Srinagar.<br/><br/>The public transport was off the roads. Some private vehicles were sparsely plying on city roads. The attendance in government, private offices, banks and other establishments was largely affected. The bandh call was made against the civilian deaths that followed after the killing of top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani and his two associates in an encounter on Friday. Wani was carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head. <br/><br/><br/>A Police spokesman in a statement said mobs set on fire Police Post Fruit Mandi Sopore in north Kashmir and Police Post Litter in south Kashmir. He said, a number of police establishments were also attacked by the mobs. The spokesman added that at Zirpora Bijbehara in Ananatnag, militants fired upon police and CRPF personnel deployed for law & order duties which resulted in injuries to three persons who have been hospitalized. <br/><br/> There were incidents of stone pelting and clashes with the police and other security personnel in various parts of Kashmir and parts of Srinagar. However, there was no report of any fresh fatal casualty from any part of the Valley. The death toll of civilians remained at 22 with one death of policeman in Sangam area of Anantnag district. The toll may increase as several critically injured persons are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
