Another batch of over 1,000 Indians was airlifted from Libya in three chartered flights of Egypt Air and one special flight of Air India on Friday. Airport officials said while Air India flight with 255 passengers landed at IGI airport in New Delhi, 804 evacuees reached Mumbai by three chartered flights of Egypt Air. External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said 10,000 Indians had been evacuated from Libya so far. He told reporters in Bangalore on Friday that 2,000 more people would be evacuated today. Private carriers – Jet Airways and Kingfisher, which were to fly to Djerba in Tunisia and Alexandria in Egypt to bring back stranded Indians, said they will now operate flights to Malta. Meanwhile, at least 30 people, including a rebel leader, have been killed in fierce battles as forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi launched an offensive to retake the western city of Zawiyah. The deaths occurred during clashes in and around Zawiyah, 50 kilometers west of Tripoli. Also, 17 people were killed after a powerful explosion rocked the eastern city of Benghazi late on Friday. Clashes and battles erupted in several other cities. Interpol has issued a global alert against Col Gaddafi and 15 others, including members of his family and close associates. The action comes following a UN Security Council travel ban and asset freeze against them. In a statement, the Interpol said that the move was also to assist the International Criminal Court investigation into alleged crimes against humanity in Libya.
