Holi festivities replace charged-up political atmosphere in West Bengal

In poll-bound West Bengal, Dol (Holi) festivities replaced the charged-up political atmosphere today, a public holiday in the state. Rising above political and religious divide, candidates of various parties and faiths in Kolkata and districts mingled with revelers and other citizens at community organized Holi, Vasantotsav and Hasya Kavi Sammelan events without banners and the usual processions and slogan chanting supporters. They exchanged greetings and applied abir (gulal) even to their political and electoral rivals. Governor KN Tripathi and chief minister Mamata Banerjee have greeted the people on the festival of colours.<br/><br/> The Congress, meanwhile has issued a supplementary list of 13 Assembly candidates, changing some already fielded party contestants, triggering a fresh wave of hectic activity for altered strategy in the opponents.<br/><br/> In Santiniketan thousands of visitors from all over India and a large number of foreign tourists have gathered to witness and join-in the traditional dawn-to-dusk celebration of Vasantotsav with dry gulal and Tagore dance-dramas at Viswa Bharati. The administration there has taken special measures to ensure a peaceful and pleasant festival.<br/><br/>In Kolkata, public transport, including Metro services, remain suspended till late in the afternoon today due to the holi festivity.<br/><br/>
