President Pranab Mukherjee has said simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies can take place if political parties reach consensus. <br/><br/>Addressing National Voters' Day in New Delhi this afternoon, Mr Mukherjee said holding simultaneous elections will remove inconvenience and lessen expenditure. He said Indian voters have voted with utmost maturity against opportunistic alliances and coalition government uncertainties in the past. <br/><br/>He asked people to exercise their democratic right and the country's youth, a prerequisite for future of democracy. He also presented awards to winners of drawing competition across states on the theme-Every vote counts. <br/><br/>On the occasion, the President presented EPIC cards to five newly registered voters.<br/><br/>Mr Mukherjee also conferred best electoral practices award to district election officers, Suraksha Prabandan award to police officers. MD of Delhi Metro, Mangu Singh and Legal Adviser Election Commission S K Mendiratta among others received special electoral awards.<br/><br/>Chief Election Commissioner, Dr Nasim zaidi, while listing the initiatives of the EC said, E-postal ballots for service personnel would be implemented in Assembly polls. He also said, knowledge survey for overseas citizens about the Indian electoral process is underway. The process would identify barriers in implementing E-postal ballot soon for them. The Book-Unfolding of Indian elections-Journey of leading democracy was released by President Mukherjee during the function.
