Hoardings with flashing signals to be erected at unmanned railway crossings: Govt

The government today said hoardings with flashing signals will be erected at unmanned railway level crossings to alert the people. Boundary walls are also being erected at identified locations vulnerable to trespass. Replying to the supplementaries in the Lok Sabha today, Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu said that his ministry has also undertaken pilot projects to deploy ex-servicemen as road counsellors to guide the road users at unmanned level crossings in Northern and North Western Railways. The Minister informed the House that in the last three years up to November of this year 4,243 unmanned level crossings have been eliminated from Indian Railway Network. Railway has contacted ISRO and Remote Sensing Authority for mapping of vulnerable locations.

He said that government is also thinking of involving Civil Society Organisations and even Religious Organisations for cooperation in preventing accidents at the unmanned railway crossings. The Minister said, his Ministry is for the first time going to hold a meeting of General Railway Police from States and Railway Protection Force in view of strengthening the railway security. Welcoming the suggestion for a hospital each at every railway station, he said directions have been issued to give priority for saving lives in case of accident and ensure victims should reach the nearest hospitals as early as possible and police processing could be done later.
