The Home Minister has called upon the states to give high priority to increasing budget allocation for strengthening police forces. Mr. P Chidambaram regretted that policing is not being given priority by the states while allocating funds for the purpose. <br/>He was addressing the members of the consultative committee attached to the ministry on the issue of modernization police forces. The Home Minister said that the centre has been forced to substantially strengthen the para-military forces as the states are not enhancing and modernising the state police at the desired level. <br/><br/>He said that a lot more needs to be done by the states on their own even a the centre is helping them to build better police stations and modern weaponry. He also reiterated the need for filling up the vacancies in state police.
