HM inaugurates South Asian Sub-Regional Drug Focal Point Meeting

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, today inaugurated the Sub-Regional Drug Focal Point Meeting and Drug Demand Reduction Expert Group Consultation, South Asia under the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme, CPDAP in New Delhi.<br/><br/>While addressing the gathering, Home minister said, the countries from South Asia and other observer countries should work on collaborative projects in the area of drug controlling. Mr Singh also raised concern over the involvement of various terrorist groups and syndicates in drug trafficking, which raising threat to national security and sovereignty.<br/><br/>Home minister highlighted in his speech that, due to the presence of golden crescent and golden triangle in the region, part of South West and South East Asia are more venerable for drug trafficking and its abuse. Due to India's close proximity with major opium growing areas of the region, India is facing the serious menace of drug trafficking and spillover effect. Mr Sing also said, drug abuse especially among the youth is matter of concern, and gave message to youth and to the world at large to 'To make health as new high in life, not drugs'.<br/><br/>About 40 delegates from various participating countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and observer countries including USA and Myanmar will participate in the three-day meeting being organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau.<br/><br/>The main objective of the meeting is to review the progress of the Drug Demand and Supply Reduction activities in the region. This conference will facilitate exchange of views on technical aspects of the drug cooperation programme and it aims at achieving effectiveness and efficiency.<br/><br/>
