Even as reports indicate that almost half of Asia's HIV infected people live in India, fortunately new cases of infection is coming down in the country. Kerala has also recorded noteworthy decline in the number new HIV infection cases. In Kerala, thanks to high literacy rate and excellent health care facilities in all districts the number fresh cases of HIV is fast declining. As of October this year, the state has a total number of 17,362 people living with HIV. Of this 58.7 per cent are men and 2.3 per cent are children. There is 15 per cent reduction in new HIV cases in Kerala. At the same time thanks to fading stigma and phobia there is ten fold increase in those willing to get tested for HIV/ AIDs. However, in Palakkad district, the number of confirmed HIV cases are more in places adjoining Tamil Nadu. The role being played by All India Radio and Doordarshan in spreading AIDS awareness continues to receive wide appreciation in Kerala.
