Historic Right to Education Act comes into force today

Compulsory and quality elementary education becomes the fundamental right of every child in the country beginning today. The legal right to education for children between the age of 6-14 years will benefit nearly one crore children who do not go to schools at present. The provision of the Act says no school can deny admission to a student. Standards have been laid down in the act for the training of teachers and infrastructure to ensure that quality education is provided. <br/><br/>The local bodies and the state governments will undertake household surveys and neighborhood school mapping to ensure that all children are sent to school. Twenty five per cent of the seats will have to be reserved in private schools for children belonging to disadvantaged sections of society. Children suffering from disabilities will also have the right to pursue free and compulsory education.<br/><br/>Earlier in his message to the nation on the occasion, the Prime Minster has called upon the states and all other stake holders to join the centre in the national effort to realize the Right to Education to children. Dr Manmohan Singh said that the Centre, the States and Union Territories, at the district and village level must work together with full resolve and determination in this common endeavor. He said the government is committed to ensuring that all children, irrespective of gender and social category, have access to education. He said the needs of every disadvantaged section of our society, particularly girls, dalits, adivasis and minorities must get special focus in the implementation of the Act.<br/><br/>Dr Manmohan Singh said government is of the firm belief that India’s future as a strong and prosperous country will be secure if the young people are nurtured with right education. He said India is a Nation of young people and their health, education and creative abilities will determine the well being and strength of the nation.<br/><br/>Prime Minister also said that success of any educational endeavour is based on the ability and motivation of teachers and called upon all the of them to become partners in this effort. He said that at the same time it is also incumbent upon every one to work together to improve the working conditions of the teachers so that they are able to teach with dignity. He said that Parents and guardians too have a critical role to play in this effort.
